Folks Really Don’t Want Voice Calls On Airplanes, Marriott’s Award Category Updates for 2014, Check Your United Account To See If You Got Status You Didn’t Earn. Things I Find Interesting On Friday, March 21, 2014

Read some of the comments folks are submitting to the FCC in opposition to cell phone usage on planes for voice calls.

It’s getting cheaper to fly to London.  Head for Points has the scoop here (HT to View From the Wing as well).  Departure taxes can make it a bad value to redeem miles for a coach award to/from London.  A drop of roughly $40-50 a ticket for coach and almost $100 on a premium cabin ticket is a decent reduction.  Still pricey, but more reasonable.

Delta makes a customer-friendly change (for a change).  It’s now possible for same-day changes for folks ticketed in a premium cabin.  It will no longer be required that the same fare class you purchased is available, just a seat.

Marriott has announced their category changes this year. Mommy Points does a good job summarizing the changes.  The two biggest takeaways I see here are the number of properties that are no longer eligible for use with Marriott’s popular MegaBonus promotion because they’re above a Category 4 and the fact that the properties in categories 7 through 9 are really just way too expensive for most folks to plan on redemptions at these properties.

Is United giving status to prior loyal customers in the wake of Delta’s decision to chase away mid-tier elites?

Trying to figure out how to stay at more luxury hotels when you vacation for cheap or free?  If you occasionally travel for business, it might be worth a mattress run (grabbing an extra hotel room night here and there to achieve a higher level of status).  One Mile At a Time has a good rundown of the math behind mattress runs.
