787 Dreamliner BOS-NRT: Some Random Pics and Thoughts

A few pics of the lavs on the 787. I found a few to be bigger than others. Not sure if this is standard on other JAL flights, but features included:

Touch-free flushing (hold your hand in front of a sensor). A lever automatically pushes the seat down if you leave it up before flushing.

Touch-free faucets. Starting to see these more and more on planes.

Bidet. That’s the first time I’ve seen that.

Essentially, with the exception of the bathroom lock/door handle, you can do everything in the bathroom without touching anything.

Some wrap-up thoughts on the inaugural flight:

My ears didn’t pop noticeably on the descent. Could be fluke, could be the lower pressurization. I still expected some ear popping, but didn’t notice it at all.

I felt great after we landed. I didn’t sleep that long, and didn’t drink that much water. But, I didn’t feel dehydrated or worn out at all. I’ve felt worse getting off a simple transcon. I’ve heard reports that people say they can’t tell the difference flying on the 787. While I’ve only had one experience, I would say that notion is complete and utter crap.

I’m biased, for sure. But, the 787 is the future of aviation. It’ll be a long time before we see these innovations on all planes, but I honestly wonder if there will be significant innovation in my “travel” lifetime (the next 30 years) beyond what we see on the Dreamliner. I have no doubt they will be contemplated and designed, but the deployment timeframes of such things may be far in the future.

For now, I’ll be content for more flights on the 787 Dreamliner and future planes that incorporate these innovations.
